AltBuild Expo 2012

Speaking at AltBuild Expo, the annual alternative building materials and design exposition in Santa Monica, gave me a terrific introduction to this gathering. AtlBuild Expo is now in its ninth year and they are doing some exciting things!  If you’ve not heard of, or not attended, this event, it’s a small convention-style gathering of more than one hundred exhibitors and educational speaking events and speaker panels.

While the exhibits dazzled, meeting the people working in sustainable (aka alternative) building is the highlight for me, from David Rosenstein of EVO farm with his innovative compact hydroponic system (perfect for space-challenged people intent on producing a portion of their own food), to Arthur Renaud and the Reuse People of America, to the great “Developers Go green” panel Wally Geer of NexUrban moderated.  In the “Developers Go Green” panel, we heard from Harlan Lee of Lee Homes, Steve and Lauri Lappin of Pacific Cove Development, and   Lisa Paperno of Deasy/Penner & Partners on experiences and advice with planning, developing, marketing and selling a diversity of sustainable communities.

I spoke with Tenaya Asan and Deborah Lichliter of Build It Green on “Understanding the Marketing and Sales for Green Homes”.  If you would like to know more about the (Not So) New Rules of Green Marketing, you can find my portion of the presentation here.

If you want to see what you missed, and plan for a visit next year, you can keep track of AltBuild Expo via their web site:  click here.
